RFID, or radio-frequency identification tags are commonly found in things like the EZPass and other forms of public transit technology. However, these tags can be expensive to make and could never compete with the cost-effectiveness of barcodes until now.

According to a recent story run in MIT’s Technology Review, researchers in South Korea have printed RFID circuits on plastic films using a combination of industrial methods: roll-to-roll printing, ink-jet printing, and silicone rubber-stamping, making for a much more affordable and cost-effective type of tag. This new technology of making RFID tags could change the way we identify products in manufacturing and retail, however, it doesn’t look like they’ll be replacing barcodes just yet.

It’s true – mobile barcode scanning has been taken to the next level by move ticketer Fandango as it has just released a new program that will allow for users in eight specified cities to have their pre-purchased ticket sent directly to their mobile phone through a 2D barcode.

According to Rick Butler, chief operating officer at Fandango, the company has seen success in the mobile space with the variety of apps for the iPhone,Android ( News – Alert), Blackberry, Palm and others.

“We know that Mobile Ticket will be one more Fandango convenience that moviegoers will enjoy,” Butler said. “Our cell phones are with us all the time – so what better way to ensure you have your movie ticket?”

All moviegoers have to do is just take their mobile phones to the theater ticket taker, who will then scan the code and let you go through. No more lines, ticket systems, kiosks, or box offices.
